In a significant move aimed at improving the ticket booking experience for genuine passengers, Indian Railways has introduced major reforms in the online booking system, especially targeting misuse in Tatkal ticket bookings. The changes come after a widespread issue of automated bots and fake user IDs created hurdles for regular users trying to book tickets.
Over 2.5 Crore Fake IRCTC Accounts Deactivated
To tackle fraudulent activity, Indian Railways has deactivated over 2.5 crore suspicious IRCTC accounts. This step was taken after the Ministry of Railways detected irregular ticket booking patterns that were likely being manipulated by bots and unauthorized agents. These fake accounts were reportedly booking tickets at lightning speed, particularly during the highly competitive Tatkal booking window.
This crackdown was highlighted in the ongoing Parliament session when MP AD Singh raised concerns about online ticketing scams. In response, the government shared details of its action and emphasized the need to protect genuine passengers from booking fraud.
Tatkal Booking Reforms: Aadhaar Verification Mandatory
To make the process more transparent, Aadhaar verification has now been made mandatory for booking Tatkal tickets. From July 1, 2025, only users with verified Aadhaar details can book Tatkal tickets through the IRCTC website or app. This step aims to ensure that only legitimate users can access this emergency reservation facility.
Moreover, the first 30 minutes after the Tatkal window opens will be blocked for booking by agents, giving individual passengers a fair chance to secure seats. This change alone is expected to make a huge difference in the availability of Tatkal tickets.
Changes to Emergency Quota Rules
In addition to Tatkal reforms, Indian Railways has also revised the Emergency Quota (EQ) booking rules. Earlier, applications for EQ could be submitted on the same day of travel, but now passengers must submit requests at least one day in advance.
The Emergency Quota is generally reserved for Members of Parliament, senior officials, medical emergencies, and senior citizens. These changes are aligned with Indian Railways’ broader move to finalize reservation charts 8 hours before train departure, allowing better planning and reducing last-minute confusion.
Promoting Digital and Transparent Booking
Indian Railways continues to promote digital bookings, with nearly 89% of all tickets now being booked online. For passengers booking through Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters, digital payment options are now available, enhancing convenience and reducing queues.
The government reassured passengers that special trains will be introduced to handle increased demand, and waiting list trends are constantly monitored to adjust train services accordingly.
