Indian Railway News – 18 Dec 2025
Indian Railways has announced an important update in the reservation chart preparation timing, bringing major relief to passengers travelling with Waiting List and RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) tickets. The new rule aims to provide clarity on ticket status well in advance, especially for passengers travelling from remote locations to board long-distance trains.
Indian Railways Revises Chart Preparation Rules
In a latest circular issued on December 12, the Ministry of Railways informed all Principal Chief Commercial Managers (PCCMs) about changes in the preparation of the first reservation chart. According to the Railway Board, the revised timing has been introduced to reduce last-minute uncertainty and stress for passengers regarding ticket confirmation.
The Railway Board stated that preparing reservation charts earlier will help passengers plan their journey better and avoid unnecessary travel if tickets remain unconfirmed.
New Chart Preparation Time Before Train Departure
As per the updated Indian Railways chart preparation guidelines, the timing now depends on the scheduled departure of the train.
For trains departing between 05:01 hrs and 14:00 hrs
The first reservation chart will be prepared preferably by 20:00 hrs on the previous day.
For trains departing between 14:01 hrs and 23:59 hrs
The first reservation chart will be prepared preferably at least 10 hours before departure.
For trains departing between 00:00 hrs and 05:00 hrs
The first reservation chart will also be prepared preferably at least 10 hours in advance.
This change allows passengers holding Waiting List or RAC tickets to know their final reservation status much earlier than before.
How the New Chart Timing Helps Passengers
- The revised chart preparation time is particularly beneficial for
- Waiting List passengers checking confirmation chances
- RAC ticket holders planning their travel
- Passengers travelling from distant or rural areas
- Senior citizens and families who need advance clarity
With charts prepared earlier, passengers can make informed decisions about alternative travel plans if their tickets do not get confirmed.
Rise in IRCTC Online Ticket Booking
Indian Railways has also highlighted a significant increase in online ticket bookings. According to a written reply in the Lok Sabha on December 3, 2025, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that more than 87 percent of reserved tickets are now booked through IRCTC’s online platform.
The growing preference for IRCTC ticket booking online has made timely chart preparation even more important, as millions of passengers rely on real-time updates for their journey planning.
What Passengers Should Remember
- Passengers are advised to Check reservation status regularly on IRCTC
- Track chart preparation time based on train departure
- Avoid last-minute travel without confirmed tickets
- Use IRCTC apps or official railway websites for updates
Final Words
The new Indian Railways chart timing rule is a passenger-friendly step that brings greater transparency and convenience to train travel. By preparing reservation charts earlier, Indian Railways aims to reduce anxiety, improve planning, and enhance the overall travel experience for Waiting List and RAC passengers.
