How to Book a Confirmed Tatkal Ticket This Diwali 2026: Top 5 Tips to Increase Your Chances

How to Book Confirmed Tatkal Tickets

Diwali is one of the busiest travel seasons in India. With thousands of passengers trying to book train tickets, getting a confirmed Tatkal ticket can be challenging. Seats often get booked within minutes of the Tatkal booking window opening.

If you are planning to travel by train this Diwali 2026, a little preparation and a smart booking strategy can improve your chances.

Here are the top 5 practical tips to book a confirmed Tatkal ticket, including some personal tricks that can save valuable time during booking.

Top 5 Tips to Get a Confirmed Tatkal Ticket This Diwali

1. Book a Maximum of 2 Passengers at a Time

Personal tip

One of my biggest suggestions is to avoid booking tickets for too many passengers in a single booking attempt.

Try to book a maximum of 2 passengers at a time. This gives you more time to enter passenger details, verify information and complete the payment process before seats run out.

Although IRCTC allows up to 4 passengers per Tatkal PNR, booking fewer passengers can make the process easier and faster.

2. Keep Your IRCTC Account Aadhaar-Verified

This is one of the most important things to do before Diwali.

As per the Railway Ministry’s rules, Aadhaar authentication is mandatory for online Tatkal bookings through the IRCTC website and app. Aadhaar-based OTP authentication is also required.

  • Log in to your IRCTC account.
  • Complete Aadhaar authentication in advance.
  • Make sure your Aadhaar-linked mobile number is active.
  • Keep your phone nearby for OTP verification.

Don’t wait until Tatkal booking time to complete authentication. Press Information Bureau+1

3. Save Passenger Details in Advance

Don’t waste precious seconds typing passenger information when Tatkal booking opens.

Keep the following details ready:

  • Passenger’s full name as per valid ID.
  • Age and gender.
  • Berth preference.
  • Mobile number.
  • Other required booking information.

One important clarification about surnames: Don’t deliberately remove your surname just to save time. Enter the passenger’s correct name, matching their travel ID. Incorrect passenger details can create problems during travel.

4. Know the Exact Tatkal Booking Time

Timing is everything when booking a Tatkal ticket.

According to IRCTC, Tatkal booking opens one day before the train’s departure date from its originating station (excluding the journey date).

Train classBooking time
AC classes10:00 AM
Non-AC classes11:00 AM

Be logged in around 10–15 minutes before the booking window opens. Keep your train number, journey details and preferred class ready.IRCTC+1

5. Use a Fast Payment Method and Reliable Internet

Even after selecting a train and entering passenger details, payment delays can ruin your booking attempt.

Follow these precautions:

  • Use a stable and reliable internet connection.
  • Keep your preferred UPI or payment method ready.
  • Make sure your bank account has sufficient balance.
  • Avoid switching between multiple devices during the booking process.
  • Complete payment as quickly as possible.

A slow payment gateway or failed transaction can cost you valuable time when seats are limited.

Bonus: Make a Backup Travel Plan

During Diwali, Tatkal tickets can sell out very quickly. Don’t depend on just one train.

Keep 2–3 alternative trains ready for your route. Check nearby boarding stations if they are convenient, and consider different travel dates if your schedule allows.

Important Tatkal Rules to Remember

  • Online Tatkal booking requires an Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC account.
  • Maximum 4 passengers can be booked on one Tatkal e-ticket PNR.
  • AC Tatkal opens at 10 AM and Non-AC at 11 AM.
  • Confirmed Tatkal tickets generally do not get a refund on cancellation, subject to specific railway exceptions. Press Information Bureau+2

Final Words

Getting a confirmed Tatkal ticket during Diwali 2026 is not easy, but proper preparation can improve your chances. My personal advice is simple: book fewer passengers, keep all details ready, complete Aadhaar verification beforehand and don’t waste time during the booking window.

Remember, no trick can guarantee a confirmed ticket because Tatkal seats are limited and allotted on a first-come, first-served basis.
