PM Modi Likely to Flag Off Vande Bharat Train to Srinagar This Week

India’s First Rail Link to Kashmir Valley Marks Historic Milestone in Infrastructure and National Unity

In a landmark moment for India’s transportation and infrastructure development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express this week. The highly anticipated train service will officially mark the first-ever railway link to the Kashmir Valley, connecting the region with the rest of the country.

A Long Awaited Inauguration:

Originally slated for April 19, the inaugural ceremony was postponed due to adverse weather and security concerns arising from the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. These events added heightened significance to the project, turning what was meant to be a celebration of infrastructure into a symbolic show of resilience and commitment to the region’s development.

Government sources have confirmed that the railway infrastructure and security arrangements are now fully in place, paving the way for the official launch.

A Defining Chapter in Indian Rail History

The Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express is a segment of the Udhampur Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Project (USBRL) a massive initiative spanning 272 km, including 119 km of tunnels, and constructed at an estimated cost of ₹42,930 crore.

Two engineering marvels define this route:

  • Chenab Bridge: The world’s highest railway bridge, standing taller than the Eiffel Tower.
  • Anji Khad Bridge: India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge.

This route is not only a feat of civil engineering but also a bold step toward national integration.

Train Features Tailored for Kashmir

This Vande Bharat Express comes with unique modifications to operate seamlessly in the challenging terrain and harsh weather of Jammu & Kashmir:

  • Onboard heating systems to manage sub-zero temperatures
  • Anti-spall layers for added passenger protection
  • Automatic doors and modern interiors for enhanced comfort

The train recently completed a successful trial run with military personnel on the Katra–Qazigund section, including the iconic Chenab Bridge, signaling readiness for public service.

A Message of Development and Defiance

More than just a train, this service stands as a bold message of progress and national unity. It reinforces the government’s intent to invest in the border state’s future and counter forces trying to destabilize the region.

According to a senior official, “This is not just about infrastructure; it’s a message that Kashmir is connected, safe, and moving forward.”

The Katra Srinagar Vande Bharat Express is set to redefine travel in the region, offering faster, safer, and more comfortable connectivity to Kashmir. As India continues to break engineering barriers and foster unity through development, this train journey will forever be remembered as a defining moment in the country’s rail legacy.
