Indian Railways has introduced an important change in its ticket verification process to tackle the growing threat of digital fraud. As per the latest update, passengers traveling with unreserved tickets must now carry a printed copy of their ticket, as showing tickets on mobile phones will no longer be accepted during checks.
Why Indian Railways Took This Decision
The decision comes after multiple cases of AI generated fake tickets were detected across different routes. Railway officials revealed that fraudsters have started using advanced artificial intelligence tools to create counterfeit mobile tickets that closely resemble genuine ones. These fake tickets often include realistic QR codes, fare details, and layouts, making them difficult to identify during routine inspections.
A recent incident on the Jaipur route, where several students were caught traveling with fake mobile tickets, highlighted the seriousness of the issue and pushed Indian Railways to take immediate action.
What the New Rule Means for Passengers
Under the new guideline, passengers who book unreserved tickets through the following modes must carry a physical printout:
- Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS)
- Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs)
- Ticket counters

During ticket inspection, only a printed ticket will be considered valid for unreserved travel. Mobile screenshots or digital displays of these tickets will be rejected.
Digital Tickets That Remain Valid
Indian Railways has clarified that this rule does not apply to all ticket types. The following tickets will continue to be accepted in digital format:
- Online reserved e-tickets booked through IRCTC
- MT-CUT tickets
Passengers using these ticket types can continue to show their tickets on mobile devices without any issues.

Railway authorities stated that the primary objective of this move is to protect railway revenue and maintain the integrity of the ticketing system. With technology advancing rapidly, Indian Railways believes stricter verification measures are essential to prevent misuse and ensure fair travel for genuine passengers.
Although the rule may cause some inconvenience for travelers used to mobile ticketing, officials emphasized that preventing fraud and ensuring passenger safety is a higher priority.
